Kitchen Utensils: Throughout History To Today

by Robin Holland-Smith

Kitchen utensils are some of the most useful but overlooked things that we have. Imagine what your life would be like if you had to eat your every day meals without the use of a knife, a fork or a spoon. For example drinking soup would be a lot harder without them.

In the earlier period of western culture, silver utensils were only used by royalty, aristocrats and the extremely wealthy because silver was considered to be a rare and precious metal to be used only by the upper classes. Wooden utensils were some of the earliest types produced in previous centuries. The common people used inexpensive steel and wooden utensils when preparing and eating their meals.

Although wooden utensils might be considered traditional, they are still around and still being used by some individuals. In fact, now modern wooden kitchen utensils are created with fine craftsmanship and are made in a variety of designs. The most common kitchen utensils made from wood include spoons, forks, ladles, mortar and pestles spreaders, pins, and spatulas.

T&G waxed wooden utensils are a rage now. Many people are buying them for their modern kitchen. Only thing is that utensils made from wood call for proper care and maintenance for them to last a long time. Always try to hand-wash them. Never put wooden utensils in the dishwasher, as the heat from the washer will eventually cause the wood to crack. Try to hand-wash your wooden utensils with cool water, mild dishwashing soap and a soft sponge.

The more frequent wooden utensils are used, the more likely grain raise appears on their surface. Due to moisture, the bumps appear on the wood. The solution for this is simple - carefully rub a sandpaper on the utensil. Rinse it then wipe it dry. If you do not have sandpaper, you may use an old brown bag instead. The fibers on the paper bag produce the same abrasive effect as sandpaper.

Heavy sanding will remove burns, stains and and any dents that you may find on the utensil. Overnight soaking of any dented areas allows the wood to expand and makes dent removal much easier. These utensils make wonderful, versatile gifts for all kinds of occasions including bridal showers and housewarmings. Every kitchen should be stocked with these helpful utensils.

Long ago, silver utensils were only used by royalty while the masses used wooden utensils. But far from being old-fashioned, wooden utensils are still being used in many households today. In fact, wooden forks, spoons, ladles, spatulas, and rolling pins have become a modern trend. T&G is one such manufacturer of contemporary wooden kitchen utensils. They just need to be washed by hand (not in the dishwasher) if you want them to last. You can remove any grain raises, dents, burns, or stains by gently sanding your wooden utensils. Wooden utensils are great gifts for any occaision, and a must have in all kitchens.
