At least 3 things you should know about espresso machines

by David Ross

How would you like to start your own coffee shop? If you have been considering starting a coffee shop this article will introduce you to the single most important item in every coffee shop - the espresso machine.

Many coffee shops have a large menu of varying coffees for their customers to try. Did you know that virtually all of these specialty coffees originate with an espresso machine? No doubt, you have tried a latte before. It may surprise you to know however, that a latte is composed of an equal amount of espresso shot and steamed milk. Or perhaps you prefer an Americano? This coffee is made by adding together a shot of espresso and some hot water to produce a full cup of coffee. Mochas, cappuccinos, frappuccinos, and macchiatos are all created with an espresso shot!

So what exactly does an espresso machine do? Well, it brews a 4-ounce shot of coffee with pressurized steam to create that full-bodied flavor we all love so well. You provide the Espresso machine with coffee beans and water and it produces the espresso. Espresso makers also have a milk frothing mechanism that can either dispense steam to froth milk or hot water to make a cup of tea.

Espresso machines come in a large range of sizes. You can get a cheap espresso maker for your home that just makes one cup at a time. Or you can purchase a commercial grade espresso maker to outfit your new coffee shop. The size and price of commercial espresso makers also varies some. You will need to determine approximately how much coffee you will be serving at a given time in order to decide which type of coffee maker is the best investment for you. You have a choice between automatic or semi-automatic espresso machines. You will also have to choose whether your espresso maker dispenses espresso shots in single, double, triple, or quadruple heads. Obviously, a single head semi-automatic espresso machine will be less expensive. However, if you are serving a large amount of guests you may need an espresso machine that produces faster.

An espresso machine could be an excellent addition to your restaurant. Specialty coffees such as cappuccinos and mochas are sure to keep your customers coming back time and time again. So what are you waiting for? Purchase an espresso maker today!
