New Home Interior Designs with Fireplace Mantels

by Wyatt Fisk

Existing as early as the medieval times, the fireplace mantel has been a part of many homes and halls. Acting as a cover that traps the smoke from the grate, some mantels may even reach up to the ceiling with complex designs and carvings. The evolution of the mantel has slowly included more elaborate frameworks that envelop the actual fireplace, thus giving its name a broader definition.

Wood is a popular material used for making fireplace mantels. Among the many different types of wood, oak is probably the most popular. The unique qualities of oak make it a favorite for many homes with fireplaces these days, regarded highly for its durability and beautiful grain. Many other materials may also be used aside from oak and other hard woods. Metal is another popular choice among more modern homes, as well as different types of stone.

Going for a specific overall look is crucial in deciding on the material that you can use for your fireplace. Traditional homes for example may use wood or stone for a warm, country look. Updated and modern homes, especially ones that use electric fireplaces, may prefer metal for their mantels. The use of metal in such cases would further support the modern look of certain homes.

With the demand for electric fireplace mantles going up nowadays, the materials used for its construction have become more available to the public. Electric fireplace mantles require the use of different materials such as steel and stone, which give the entire fireplace a more modern look. Occasionally, a combination of the materials may be used.

Always remember to match the materials for the mantel around your fireplace with the rest of the room where it is installed. This will lead to a more streamlined and clean look for the overall space. Be conscious about color combinations and how each material interacts with the others. You can combine different textured materials for a contrasting look or go for simple color combinations for a subdued and warm feel.

There are many places to draw inspiration from for the total design of your fireplace and interiors. Living in woodland areas for example, might be perfect for a rustic and warm looking fireplace and lodge. In the city, incorporate the long lines from skyscrapers to create a modern feel for your fireplace and mantel. There are just so many ways to go at it that you may never really know until you get to the point where you surprise yourself.

A great component to any room in the house is the fireplace mantel. Fireplace mantels are a great design element that can draw a lot of attention to any room. Electric fireplace mantles are also quite ripe for modern designs, as the use of modern materials such as steel and stone can create a very unique look that is yours and yours alone.
